End of a Golden Era

Yesterday Oscar De La Hoya aka the Golden Boy announced his retirement from the boxing world at age 36. Boxing was good to Oscar, the sport he took up at age 5 and the sport that made him an international star and a very wealthy man. He made his announcement yesterday in his hometown of LA in front of many adoring fans and said "It was a very emotional and difficult decision for me to make, but I have come to the conclusion that I am retiring from being a fighter." He will be missed as a boxer, but as most of you know he has taken the promotional path with his successful Golden Boy Promotions company.

De La Hoya was a pretty good fighter during his career. As an amateur he won a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics. When he turned pro all that he did was win 10 world titles in six divisions. He was the biggest revenue generator in boxing history. Despite getting a can of whoop azz put on him by Pacquiao in his last fight the Golden Boy will end up with a record of 39-6 with 30 KO's. I tip my hat to Oscar and may he enjoy his retirement (that is if he doesn't come back).
